Tip Trimming Instructions

The purpose of this tip trimming guide is to provide specific trimming instructions for AccuFlex, Aldila, Apollo, Grafalloy, Harrison, Innovative, Integra, Nano-Graphtek, Orbitor, Penley, Rapport, and United Sports Technologies (UST) Graphite Shafts, Apollo, Precision-Rifle and True Temper Steel shafts. Please remember the following rules when tip trimming your shafts:

Taper tip shafts should never be tip trimmed because they are designed to discrete lengths. butt trim taper tip shafts to finished length club length.

How to Tip Trim

Steel Shafts
1. Shafts are usually sold in single lengths and trimmed for individual clubs (trimming instructions are included with each shaft). If the instructions call for tip trimming, find the trim point by using a ruler, straight edge, yard stick or tape measure and mark the line on the shaft with a felt-tip pen or wax pencil.
2. Trim the shaft tip. For metal shafts, use a shaft cutter or plumber's tubing cutter, applying even pressure during rotation until the tip cleanly cuts.
3. Shafts require a rough surface for the epoxy to securely bond the shaft to the head. Steel shaft tips must be abraded to provide a rough surface, using a 1" belt sander, rasp, or medium-grade sandpaper. With any shaft, be sure to rough only that portion of the shaft tip that will penetrate the hosel of the clubhead (approximately 1 1/4" for a typical iron or metal wood head).
Graphite Shafts
1. Shafts are usually sold in single lengths and trimmed for individual clubs (trimming instructions are included with each shaft). If the instructions call for tip trimming, find the trim point by using a ruler, straight edge, yard stick or tape measure. Wrap the area that will be cut with two to three layers of electrical or masking tape. Mark the line on the tape wrapped around the shaft with a felt-tip pen.
2. Trim the shaft tip. For graphite, use a hacksaw, preferably with a rod saw blade, or abrasive cutoff wheel. The tape will prevent the graphite shaft fibers from splintering during cutting. Remove the tape after cutting. Important: Never use a tubing cutter on graphite shafts.
3. Shafts require a rough surface for the epoxy to securely bond the shaft to the head. Graphite shaft tips must be abraded to provide a rough surface. In preparing the tip of your shaft for attachment to the club head, it is important to evenly remove the paint from the tip without removing or damaging the graphite. It is very important to only remove the finish and paint from from the shaft tip and none of the graphite as this will damage and weaken the shaft and can cause breakage. We recommend not using a sanding belt as it is very difficult not to damage the graphite fibers as you are abrading the shaft. Therefore, we recommend that when preparing your shafts you should use a razor blade, conditioning belt or a finishing flap brush wheel that evenly removes paint from the shaft without damaging the graphite layers. Never force a graphite shaft into a head or sand a graphite shaft down to fit into a hosel. With any shaft, be sure to rough only that portion of the shaft tip that will penetrate the hosel of the clubhead (approximately 1 1/4" for a typical iron or metal wood head).
4. We also highly recommend using shafting beads to center the shaft in the hosel so that one section of shaft does not receive more stress than another in the course of play which can cause breakage.
5. Always use a head that has been countersunk for graphite shafts (all IN Golf heads are pre-coned or countersunk).

Iron shafts are combination flex shafts. Each shaft can be either regular, stiff or X-Stiff or Ladies, Seniors or Regular depending on how you cut it. This is a great way to cut down on inventory cost.
